Students conduct prescribed fire

Students burning at Compartment 46

On March 24, Students enrolled in Sewanee's Forest Restoration class conducted their first prescribed fire of the season on the Domain's Compartment 46. The prescribed fire was coordinated with the Office of Environmental Stewardship, and students recently trained and red-carded during the January wildland fire training session acted as leaders on the fire. This was the third fire in five years at this particular site, and the long-term objectives are to regenerate oak, create understory plant diversity, and to give students real management experience. All sites that are managed on the Domain are also actively monitored by the students so that we can track changes following our various forest treatments.
